Lesson 2 Good Friends

[Reading] Millet and Rousseau

p. 30

One bitter cold night, a promising but poor painter put some wood into the stove.

“Huh, this is the last piece. What am I going to do tomorrow night?”

He went back to his work with a sigh. He was too poor to buy more wood. Suddenly, someone knocked on the door. It was his close friend, Theodore Rousseau. He was a painter, too.

“Oh, how are you? What brings you here?”

“Millet! I have good news!”

“Good news? What is it?”

“Somebody wants to buy one of your paintings.”

“Is it true?" Millet was surprised.

“Sure. Now take this.” Rousseau smiled and laid out four thousand francs in cash.

“A rich businessman came to me and asked me to pick one of your paintings. He even paid in advance.”

Millet was surprised and pleased.

“Who is this generous man? Is he one of your old friends?”

“No, he is not my friend. And this kind stranger wishes to be unknown. He just wants to stay one of the admirers of your great works!”

Millet grabbed Rousseau’s hand and said, “Thank you, my dear friend. With this money I can go through this winter without worries. Now pick a painting. Which one would you like to take for him?” Rousseau went over Millet’s paintings and went home with one of them. Millet bought food and wood with the money for his family. He could spend a warm winter. Without worrying about money, he could devote himself to his own work.

A few weeks later, Millet paid an unexpected visit to Rousseau’s house. Rousseau was out, so Millet decided to wait for his friend to come home. When Millet went into the living room, he found a familiar painting hanging on the wall. Millet was surprised to see the painting. It was the painting that Rousseau picked up on behalf of the unknown person on that cold night. Now Millet knew who the generous man was. It was Rousseau who bought the painting. At that moment, Rousseau entered the living room and saw his friend whose eyes were full of tears.

밀레와 루소

살을 에듯이 추운 어느 밤, 장래가 촉망되지만 가난한 한 화가가 장작을 난로 안에 넣었다.

“흠, 이게 마지막 장작이군. 내일 밤에는 어떻게 하지?”

그는 한숨을 쉬며 다시 일을 시작했다. 그는 너무 가난해서 장작을 더 살 수 없었다. 갑자기 누군가 문을 두드렸다. 그의 친한 친구인 Theodore Rousseau(테오도르 루소)였다. 그 또한 화가였다.

“아, 잘 지내는가? 여긴 어쩐 일인가?”

“밀레! 좋은 소식이 있다네!”

“좋은 소식이라고? 그게 뭔가?”

“누군가 자네 그림 한 점을 사고 싶어 한다네.”

“그게 사실인가?” 밀레는 깜짝 놀랐다.

“물론이지. 이제 이걸 받게.” 루소는 웃으면서 현금 4천 프랑을 펼쳐 보였다.

“어떤 돈 많은 사업가가 내게 와서 자네 그림 중 한 점을 골라 달라고 부탁했다네. 그는 선금까지 지불했다네.”

밀레는 깜짝 놀랐고 기뻤다.

“인심 후한 이 남자는 누구인가? 자네 옛 친구들 중 한 사람인가?”

“아니, 내 친구는 아니라네. 그리고 이 친절한 낯선 이는 알려지기를 원하지 않아. 그는 그저 훌륭한 자네 작품을 흠모하는 사람들 중 하나로 남고 싶어 한다네!”

밀레는 루소의 손을 붙잡고 말했다. “고맙네, 내 소중한 친구여. 이 돈으로 나는 이번 겨울을 걱정 없이 날 수 있겠어. 이제 그림을 고르게. 자네는 그 사람을 위해 어떤 그림을 가져가고 싶은가?” 루소는 밀레의 그림들을 살펴보더니 그중 한 점을 들고 집에 갔다. 밀레는 그 돈으로 가족을 위해 음식과 장작을 샀다. 그는 따뜻한 겨울을 보낼 수 있었다. 그는 돈 걱정 없이 자신의 일에 전념할 수 있었다.

몇 주 후에 밀레는 루소의 집을 예기치 않게 방문했다. 루소는 집에 없었다. 그래서 밀레는 그의 친구가 집에 돌아오기를 기다리기로 결심했다. 밀레는 거실 안으로 들어갔을 때 벽에 걸려 있는 낯익은 그림 한 점을 발견했다. 밀레는 그 그림을 보고 깜짝 놀랐다. 그것은 그 추운 날 밤 그 미지의 사람을 대신하여 루소가 가져간 그림이었다. 이제 밀레는 인심 후한 그 남자가 누구인지 알았다. 그 그림을 구입한 사람은 바로 루소였다. 그때 루소가 거실로 들어왔고 눈에 눈물이 가득한 친구를 보았다.
