The results from New Hampshire are in and they`re our first topic today on CNN 10. I`m Carl Azuz wherever in the world you`re watching, thank you. Here`s what happened on Tuesday night in the Granite State. Senator Bernie Sanders came out on top in the Democratic primary. The lawmaker from Vermont received 25.8 percent of the vote followed by Pete Buttigieg, a former mayor of South Bend, Indiana who got 24.5 percent. Senator Amy Klobuchar who represents Minnesota came in third with 19.8 percent. Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and former Vice-President Joe Biden rounded out the top five though they didn`t win any pledged delegates. And that`s really the name of the game here. Whoever wins a majority of delegates through these state primaries and caucuses is likely to become a party`s nominee for president. So far Senator Sanders and former Mayor Buttigieg lead in the Democratic delegate count but the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primaries are only the first two contests. There`s still a long way to go. After the results from New Hampshire came in, a few Democrats left the race. Senator Michael Bennet of Colorado, businessman Andrew Yang and former Massachusetts Governor Duval Patrick all suspended their campaigns. They just weren`t getting the votes they needed to stay in. So now there are eight Democrats still in the race and the next contest for them will be a caucus on February 22nd in Nevada. On the other side of the political aisle, there`s one candidate former Massachusetts Governor Bill Weld who`s challenging incumbent President Donald Trump for the Republican nomination. Former U.S. Representative Joe Walsh of Illinois suspended his campaign after the Iowa caucuses last week. But in New Hampshire like in Iowa, President Trump easily won getting around 85.8 percent of the vote there. The next contest for Republicans take place in several states on Super Tuesday, March 3rd.

민주당 예비선거에서 상원의원 Bernie Sanders가 이겼습니다.

 

02. The lawmaker from Vermont received 25.8 percent of the vote followed by Pete Buttigieg, a former mayor of South Bend, Indiana who got 24.5 percent.

Vermont 출신의 Sanders 의원은 25.8 퍼센트의 득표를 했습니다. Indiana주 South Bend의 전(前) 시장이었던 Pete Buttigieg가 그 뒤를 이었는데, 24.5 퍼센트를 득표했습니다.

 

03. Senator Amy Klobuchar who represents Minnesota came in third with 19.8 percent.

Minnesota를 대표하는 Amy Klobuchar 상원의원이 3위로 19.8 퍼센트였습니다.

 

04. Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and former Vice-President Joe Biden rounded out the top five though they didn`t win any pledged delegates.

Massachusetts의 Elizabeth Warren 상원의원과 전(前) 부통령 Joe Biden 상위 5를 마무리했습니다. 비록 그들은 어떠한 pledged delegates를 얻지는 못했다고 할지라도.

민주당의 대의원 종류에는 특정후보 지지를 선언한 선언대의원(pledged delegate, 구속대의원 혹은 약속대의원)과 지지후보를 표명할 필요가 없는 비선언대의원(unpledged delegate, 비구속대의원 혹은 비약속대의원), 그리고 자유롭게 투표할 수 있는 슈퍼대의원(super delegate)으로 대별할 수 있다. 각 후보가 주 경선에서 쟁취하려고 하는 대의원은 구속력이 있는 대의원이다.

 

주별로 선출되거나 임명되는 선언대의원은 특정 후보 지지를 사전에 표명하지만, 법적으로 전당대회장에서 그 후보에게 반드시 투표해야할 의무는 없다. 그래서 각 후보들은 주별로 선언대의원의 목록을 재검토해 배신 가능성이 있는 선언대의원을 제외하기도 한다. 선언대의원이라 하더라도 전당대회에서 1차 투표에 한해서는 약속을 어느 정도 지키지만 1차 투표에서 대통령 후보가 결정되지 않고 2차, 3차 투표를 할 때는 선언대의원도 자유롭게 어느 후보에게나 투표할 수 있다.

 

 

05. And that`s really the name of the game here.  그리고 그것이 여기서 가장 중요한 점입니다.

 

 

06. Whoever wins a majority of delegates through these state primaries and caucuses is likely to become a party`s nominee for president.

이러한 예비선거와 전당대회들을 통해 대다수의 대의원들을 확보하는 누구든 당의 대선 후보가 될 가능성이 있다.

12. So now there are eight Democrats still in the race and the next contest for them will be a caucus on February 22nd in Nevada.
